Why your shorts get no views

A short with 200 views and a short with 200,000 views usually differ in the first three seconds, not in the production. The algorithm is mostly reacting to whether people stayed, and people decide almost immediately.

The wind-up

The most common failure is spending the opening explaining that something is about to be explained. "In this video I want to talk about" has cost you the audience before you said anything.

Start at the claim. Whatever your first interesting sentence is, that is the first sentence.

No reason to stay

A hook is not just an attention grab, it is a promise that something is coming. "This lake refills itself every night" works because it implies an explanation you do not have yet.

If your opening line is complete in itself, nothing is pulling the viewer forward.

Visual monotony

Short-form viewers scroll on stillness. If the frame has not changed in four seconds, a meaningful share of the audience has gone regardless of how good the audio is. Cut, move, or change the image. Motion on a still counts.

No captions

A large proportion of short-form viewing happens muted. Without captions those viewers get a moving image and no information, and they leave. Cheapest fix on the list, most often skipped.

The ending nobody reaches

Payoffs stacked at the very end fail twice: most people never see them, and the ones who do sat through a slow middle to get there. Put the best material earlier than feels comfortable.

What to actually measure

Views are an output, not a diagnostic. Retention is the diagnostic. Look at where the curve drops:

  • A cliff in the first 3 seconds means the hook failed.
  • A steady slide from the start means no promise is pulling anyone forward.
  • A drop in the middle means the payoff is too far away.
  • A good curve with low views is a distribution problem, not a content one. Post more.

Common questions

How long should the hook be?

One sentence, delivered inside the first three seconds. If your first sentence is scene-setting rather than a claim, it is not a hook.

Do hashtags help shorts get views?

Marginally at best. Retention does almost all the work. A short with strong retention and no hashtags beats the reverse consistently.

How many shorts before judging performance?

Twenty to forty. Below that you are reading noise, and changing direction every few videos means you never learn which change did anything.

Put this on autopilot

ReelioHub clips your long videos into captioned shorts, then publishes them to YouTube and TikTok on a schedule.
